Who is an Intraprenuer?
The term ‘Intrapreneur’ was coined almost two decades ago. However, it has not received the same recognition as ‘Entrepreneur’.
Intrapreneurs are those managers who are result-oriented, ambitious, rational, competitive, with high risk taking ability and questioning. They are challenged by innovation at the same time have an understanding of their organization and a belief in their colleagues.
Intrapreneurs are comfortable with change, have clarity of direction, thoroughness, a participative management style and an understanding that they needs to work with others to achieve their goals.
Entrepreneurship within existing organizations can be called as 'Corporate Entrepreneurship' or 'Intrapreneurship'. An 'Intrapreneur' is an individual charged with pushing through innovations within an organization, in an entrepreneurial fashion.
'Intrapreneurship' is an entrepreneurial way of thinking, acting and feeling of a work community. Intrapreneurs are students of circumstances and look for ways to increase business or improve the business they have. They seek alternatives and work towards innovation which is an integral part of Intrapreneurship. They have a stake in shaping the organization and know how to present it to customers with confidence, pride and assurance. Intrapreneurs have the motivations and execution skills to make "the big idea" come true, thereby fostering transformation and growth within the organization they are associated with.
The Concept of Maha-Intrapreneur
Praj believes that the innovative contribution of entrepreneurs is really supported by intrapreneurs, to a great extent, and together it becomes a successful organization. To promote the practice of intrapreneurship, the Company, as part of its Silver Jubilee celebrations in 2008, invited successful intrapreneurs under the banner of Maha-Intrapreneur. These practicing intrapreneurs shared their experiences and achievements so as to establish a source code for prospective intrapreneurs.
Inception of the Awards
At the onset of its Silver Jubilee year, Praj organized a one day program called the Maha-Intrapreneur on December 20, 2008. It was a workshop on Intrapreneurship where eminent professionals from various fields, spoke about the transformation from the 'employee-manager' approach towards a more 'entrepreneur-manager' approach in their careers. Eminent professionals like Mr. Kishor Chaukar, MD, Tata Industries, Milind Sarwate, Chief of HR and Strategy, Marico, Vikas Shirodkar, VP-HR, Johnson & Johnson; Gautam Nagvekar, Chief Operating Officer, Mahindra & Mahindra; Ravi Deshpande, Chairman & Chief Creative Officer, Contract Advertising and Yashashree Gurjar, General Manager (CSR), BILT were invited to share their experiences with around 200 professionals from various industries & institutes.
